Perched on a cliff beside a remote, windswept beach on Bali’s west coast, with a magnificent 360-degree view of mountains, rice fields and the Indian Ocean, is a spectacular enclave of villas known as Kembangdesa.The property comprises four luxury Bali villas: the one-bedroom Villa Moon, the two-bedroom Villa Breeze, the four-bedroom Villa Ocean, and the six-bedroom Villa Sunset. Each villa has its own private entrance, garden and private swimming pool. They all have direct access to the beach. The four villas can be rented separately or in any combination. The close proximity of the villas means that Kembangdesa is ideal for larger groups of people, or families, who want to be close to each other while still retaining an element of independence and privacy.

Kembangdesa is also a dream venue for weddings, events and yoga retreats.

The contemporary architecture is characterised by alang alang thatch or shingle roofs, polished concrete walls, lime-washed timbers,
open-air tropical living rooms and courtyard bathrooms open to the sky.

On a 3 hectares land, the Kembang Desa Villas have been designed to recreate the feeling of Indonesia that was to be had decades ago. Furnished with love, the interiors introduce natural materials, fabrics, antique and custom-made furniture and decorative pieces, while whimsical statues stand guard in the gardens. Lombok doors, inlaid with mother of pearl, mark the entrances to bedrooms and bathrooms, and many more richly-patterned Timorese carvings are evident on doors, beds and pillars.
The extraordinary view takes in Bali’s chain of mountains from the sacred Mt Agung in the east, to Mt Batukau, the island’s second highest volcano which dominates the northern skyline. To the west is a rugged beach of glistening black sand, fantastic sunsets and a coastal panorama that extends all the way down to Uluwatu on Bali’s south-western tip. On a clear day you can see Java, and to the east you can watch the sunrise behind Mt Agung.

Villa Moon ( 1 BR )
Villa Moon is a romantic, one-bedroom honeymoon villa complete with a thatched roof, a garden with a stairway leading down to the beach, stunning views, and a private 3 x 6 m pool. The open-air living and dining room has a built-in sofa and a dining table, and is flanked by an open plan kitchenette. The bedroom is furnished with a double bed, wardrobe, a built-in wooden desk, and a daybed that serves as an extra bed for a child. The garden bathroom is equipped with a standing rainshower and a rough hewn marble washbasin.

Villa Breeze ( 2 BR )
The two-bedroom, two-storey Villa Breeze is octagonal in shape with an alang alang thatched roof. It boasts a beautiful open plan living and dining room, which integrates a kitchen. Here funky floors and walls present myriad textures incorporating stacked slate, stones, mosaic tiles, and numerous sofas, ottomans and a rustic dining table.Downstairs is a romantic bedroom with a queen bed positioned in an arched alcove with a single bed, and an open-air ensuite bathroom with peepholes to the sea view. The master bedroom and ensuite bathroom cover the rest of the upper floor,with panoramic views all round.The bedroom is furnished with a king bed, a Timorese carved desk and a sofa. There is a small balcony to one side, which is a delightful spot for relaxing and catching the cool breezes. At the top of the stairs is a mezzanine landing supporting a den office with a gorgeous vista. The garden extends to the cliff edge with a fabulous 20-metre T-shaped infinity swimming pool that appears to overflow into the ocean. A bale relaxation pavilion rests to one side. Atnight the pool is lit by fibre optic lights reminiscent of the stars, the Javanese fishing boats on the horizon.

Villa Ocean ( 4 BR )
The four-bedroom Villa Ocean is single storey and comprised of two buildings to maximise the eye-boggling views. The main building incorporates three bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, the living and dining room, and a fully equipped open plan kitchen. The living and dining room presents tropical open-air living at its best with comfortable cushioned sofas, a dining table for 10, and a terrace that spills onto the pool deck. The sparkling swimming pool measures 12 x 3 metres and features a ‘bale bengong’ relaxation pavilion on one side and a raised dining bale with a table for 10 on the other side. There are three bedrooms within the main building, including the master with a king bed, a day bed, Timorese carvings and Moghul inspired alcoves.The third bedroom features twin beds that can be converted to a double. The second building is a standalone one-bedroom guest house with a queen size bed and an open-air bathroom.

Villa Sunset ( 6 BR )
The six-bedroom, two-storey Villa Sunset is the largest of the four villas, standing proud on the cliff top with breathtaking views of the rice fields, ocean, coastline and mountains. The main living and dining pavilion is open on the seaward sides, and cooled by the fresh ocean breezes. It features built-in cushioned sofas and a dining table for 14. A second dining table is positioned on an outdoor terrace with beautiful views extending right up the coast. There is also a fully equipped open plan kitchen with rustic carved cupboard doors, polished marble work surfaces, and a hand made carve marble sink. There are six bedrooms at Villa Sunset, five bathrooms, and a guest washroom. This includes two master bedrooms, one of which is situated on the ground floor overlooking the enticing swimming pool with the Indian Ocean beyond. The villa has an ironwood shingle roof and is crafted in shades of coffee and cream with ornately carved Timorese timbers and doors, sculptured polished concrete walls with built-in sofas, and open-air bathrooms. There is a second bedroom on this floor, with twin beds that can be converted to a double bed if required. The second master bedroom is upstairs with a wraparound terrace and views on three sides. The sixth bedroom, with a king bed, is found in a stand-alone, enchanting traditional wooden house from Java, which was dismantled, transported, and rebuilt in Bali.
This romantic, antique building is characterised by a soaring roof, beautifully carved double doors and a raised verandah on two sides linked to a luxurious walled garden bathroom. Bathrooms feature standing rainshowers and huge river rock bathtubs under the stars. The front garden of Villa Sunset presents a 17 x 4 metre infinity lap pool and two ‘bale’ pavilions for relaxing or dining.

Location

Getting to Kembangdesa Villas is a wonderful journey along country lanes through traditional villages, passing wooded valleys and crossing rivers before finally reaching a simple track that winds through rice fields. Kembangdesa Villas are located on Bali’s west coast, in the Tabanan Regency. The coastline presents isolated coves and rocky outcrops, and is famous for its surf beaches, including Medewi and Balian, which offer the longest point breaks in Bali. The Regency is known as Bali’s ‘rice bowl’ – the most agriculturally productive region in Bali. Besides rice, there are crops of coconuts, coffee, cacao, spices and tropical fruits. This area is also home to the 2276-metre Mt Batukau, the higher slopes of which are alpine with mountain streams, ferns, wildflowers, creepers and orchids, as well as the rare, black leaf-eating monkey, the kijang (small forest deer), large butterflies and moths, flying lizards, and the lubak (mongoose). It is also a bird watchers’ paradise, habitat of the Bali Black Eagle. Depending on the traffic, the villa is 1.5 – 2 hours’ drive from Bali’s international airport and 60 – 90 minutes’ drive from trendy Seminyak with its exciting nightlife and abundance of fashion boutiques, luxurious spas, and internationally acclaimed restaurants. ‘Nirwana Bali Golf Course’ is about 30 minutes’ drive. Designed by Greg Norman, this was voted the number 1 golf course in Indonesia; it is situated beside the dramatic, waved-lashed sea temple of Tanah Lot.
