Villa Arsana Estate

This splendid four-bedroom villa occupies a gorgeous two-hectare estate which flows down a terraced hillside in the rural hinterland of southwest Bali. The Arsana Estate provides the perfect setting for weddings, events and spiritual retreats, or quite simply for families or groups looking for a close-to-nature playground in which to relax away from the hustle and bustle of Bali’s more crowded tourist centres. At this very self-contained villa there is no real need to venture out at all, but a visit to the nearby village – one of the prettiest in Bali – or a bicycle ride along the tiny roads, past farmers tending their rice fields, should not be missed.

The Arsana Estate blends its exceptional location with outstanding facilities, including swimming pools, a games room, home theatre, fully stocked bars and dedicated massage areas. These are complemented by top levels of service from an exceptional team of staff headed by a knowledgeable villa manager and including an experienced, talented chef and a driver.

Arsana means ‘flow’ in Sanskrit, and not only does the villa’s name aptly describe the Sungi River that meanders past its lower boundary, but also the way The Arsana Estate’s individual bedroom and living pavilions cascade down the hillside into a valley of birdsong. Scores of eye-catching butterfly and bird species, including kingfishers, flit through the expansive terraced gardens and trees throughout the day, while the cicadas and frogs take over the nightshift with their chirping melodies and bass notes. Indeed, water features large at The Arsana Estate, where ponds, water walls, waterfalls, and an 18 x 8-metre swimming pool with a separate children’s section will refresh, relax and delight villa guests.

The villa’s sleek modern structures, with their ironwood shingle roofs and abundance of glass, reflect the ambiance of the location and the purity of the natural surroundings, while the interiors are characterised with a bold use of colour and super-comfortable furnishings. A fully stocked bar with red lanterns and matching cushioned bar stools is an obvious focal point, as is the home theatre and games room complete with a pool table. Valuable and renowned artworks line much of what solid wall space there is, while the front facade of the living pavilion is an abstract notion of floor-to-ceiling glass doors and windows that remain open to the elements. The villa’s four double bedroom suites (two of which also contain annexes suitable for children), each housed in its own private stand-alone pavilion, are spread leisurely across the terraces of the estate.

Fully outfitted for families, with a profusion of kids’ (and adults’) toys, games and activities, this stunning sanctuary with its team of personal butlers, housekeepers and chefs, offers guests nothing but pleasure and relaxation.

Accommodation

The contemporary Bali style architecture at The Arsana Estate incorporates Feng Shui, spiritual, symbolic and Western spacial elements, as well as bold colour-themed interior design aesthetics, surrounded by the ever-present embrace of the jungle and river. Approached via an enchanting courtyard, an avenue of palms and a dramatic, four-metre-wide stairway, the main U-shaped pavilion presides over the gardens and swimming pool. Here, a grand entrance hall is flanked by two wings with an open-air terrace in-between. One wing comprises a living area, bar and TV room, and the other presents a dining room, feature kitchen and a games room. The living and dining spaces are wrapped in glass doors and windows that can be opened up for a semi-alfresco experience. The swimming pool, pool lounge and massage rooms are positioned on a lower level and linked by a waterfall from the terrace above. The four bedrooms are leisurely spread throughout the grounds, housed in stand-alone pavilions.

Master suite
This yellow-themed, fully air-conditioned suite is ideal for a family; comprising a master bedroom with king-size bed, dressing area and bathroom, a TV room equipped with satellite-channel TV/DVD player and furnished with a sofa (which doubles as a bed suitable for two children), and a glass-walled study. An additional room is furnished with a sofa that also converts to a small double bed, while an open-air sunken lounge at the front provides a great place to relax upon a huge cushioned sofa while enjoying views of the gardens and river valley.

Bordered by a fish-filled lily pond and guarded by a serene Buddha statue, the master bathroom is fitted with a sunken tub and walk-in monsoon shower. Glass doors fold open to create an alfresco bathing experience.

Guest suites
Two of the guest suites are furnished with queen-size beds and one with twin beds that convert to a king. Each suite is housed within a self-contained pavilion with a timber floor, vaulted roof, windows on two sides that open to the view, and a covered terrace at the front furnished with armchairs. Each suite follows a cheery colour theme in blue, green, or red – with soft furnishings and high quality artwork in coordinating hues. The red suite incorporates a double daybed set within a window recess, which converts to a bed for two children. Positioned between the sleeping area and the bathroom of each suite is a dressing area with twin wash basins, large wall mirrors, storage and hanging space. Each cream terrazzo ensuite is identical to the master bathroom in configuration and outlook.

Living Spaces

Living room and bar
The living area overlooks the pool from the upper level of the main pavilion. Glass doors open out onto a terrace and a big red sofa provides an abundance of comfortablew seating around a coffee table. Adjacent to the living area is a well-stocked cocktail bar stylishly crafted in black terrazzo and ideal for parties and other special events. The bar is complemented by six red bar stools, red lanterns and ceiling-mounted speakers.

Home theatre
A self-contained home theatre is situated in the same wing as the living area. This cosy-yet-spacious air-conditioned room is wired for surround-sound and fully equipped with a 60-inch satellite-channel TV, a DVD player and a good selection of movies for both adults and children. Presenting an olive green colour scheme, this delightful family room is furnished with a segmented sofa and beanbags.

Dining room and breakfast pergola
The dining area is situated opposite the living area and bar in the main pavilion. Here, a glass-topped table for 12 is flanked by royal-blue-cushioned dining chairs. Adjacent, but outdoors, is a breakfast area with a terracotta tiled floor sheltered by a pergola roof dripping in white-flowering thunbergia. Furnished with a table for ten, this is a great spot to start the day.

Kitchen
Fashioned in terrazzo and stainless steel, The Arsana’s feature kitchen presents wall units in a chic shade of French navy and a four-burner hob. A fully equipped service kitchen is located behind here, out of sight. The kitchen’s L-shaped bar counter serves as an alternative venue for breakfast and seats eight guests on funky white stools.

Games room
The air-conditioned, self-contained games room is characterised by a blue décor, and equipped with a pool table, a chess set, and a cupboard full of board games. Two big blue armchairs and some high stools are positioned next to a bar-shelf and a large wall mirror. A guest washroom is conveniently situated off this room.

Outside Places

Terrace
A sunny terrace, furnished with comfortable rattan-look furniture lies between the living room and the dining room upstairs in the main pavilion. Guests can relax here on rattan-look, cushioned chairs. The terrace is bordered at the front by a shallow reflective pool with an infinity edge that appears to overflow into the jungle. In actual fact, the gin-clear water flows over the edge into a water cascade that, in turn, flows into the swimming pool several metres below.

Swimming pool and pool lounge/bar
The pool area is accessed by steps leading down from the living and dining level. The 18 x 8-metre swimming pool is distinguished by two infinity edges and two ironwood decks furnished with sunbeds and umbrellas. The water cascade from the upper terrace is a striking feature; flanked by frangipani trees it flows into a shallow children’s pool at one end of the main pool. Next to the pool deck is a white Palimanan stone pool lounge and bar with a glass and teakwood roof, ceiling fans, bar stools, a table and built-in cushioned daybeds for lounging and enjoying barbecues, tapas and drinks from the bar. There is a washroom to one side. Also beside the pool are two shady massage annexes.

Gardens and balés
The gardens of The Arsana feature nearly two hectares of terraced lawns, punctuated with beautiful trees and bordered by a jungle-lined river valley. At the highest point of the property, appropriately known as Sunset Point, is a balé relaxation pavilion offering a wonderful venue for sunset cocktails while surveying the glorious rural vista. Additionally, a riverside balé, close to the pool deck is a magical spot for a massage.

Dining

The villa offers a menu (featuring Indonesian and International dishes) to make ordering easier, but guests should chat with Alit, the chef, if there are other specific items they would like to try. Alit can competently accommodate special dietary requests and has a great repertoire of vegetarian delights. He can, of course, adjust the seasoning of dishes to suit different palates.

This is a good opportunity to try favourite Indonesian dishes such as Nasi Goreng (fried rice) Mie Goreng (fried noodles), or Soto Ayam (spicy chicken soup), as well as Nasi Campur – the everyday Balinese meal that can be customised to suit the occasion. Nasi Campur is comprised of rice and a selection of vegetables, meat or fish and other accompaniments that might include egg, tofu, and the fried soybean cakes known as ‘tempe’. Another ‘must try’ is Rendang Daging – a famous Indonesian delicacy created from succulent chunks of beef stewed in coconut cream and spices.

Salads include squid with green mango; grilled prawn with pomelo and apple, and Caesar with grilled chicken, while other Western dishes on the menu include hamburgers, pizzas, pasta, and delights such as grilled tenderloin with asparagus and oyster sauce, or rolled chicken breast stuffed with emmental cheese and cream mushroom sauce. Tapas and snacks include traditional Indonesian Tahu Isi – stuffed tofu, and chicken satay with spicy peanut sauce, Chef Alit specialises in desserts of watermelon granite with vanilla yogurt, and jackfruit fritters with pineapple sauce – a seasonal treat created with jackfruit plucked from trees in the garden. Beverages include freshly squeezed fruit juices, spirits, wines and cocktails.

To get the best out of the kitchen, it is a good idea to plan meals the evening before or over breakfast so that the staff can arrange deliveries or do the shopping in a timely fashion during the day. Food and drink is provided on a ‘cost’ basis with a 10% mark-up to cover pick-ups/delivery and stock ingredients.

Children at The Arsana Estate

Villa holidays are an excellent option for families, and the owners of The Arsana Estate have three young children, so the villa has evolved around their needs. Family-friendly advantages of villa stays include having access to your own private facilities, such as a swimming pool, living space and gardens, and having the freedom to use them whenever you want. Knowing that the kids can run around happily, independently and safely, without you having to worry about other guests, is a real plus – and one that means parents are certain to have a more relaxed holiday too.

As well as offering plenty of space, The Arsana Estate has a kids’ pool adjoining the main swimming pool; a children’s play area with a trampoline and basketball hoop; extensions to the master suite and one of the guest suites incorporating kids’ sleeping areas; two self-contained TV Rooms with DVD players; Nintendo Wii, and a library of kids’ DVDs. Additionally, there is a Fußball table, a dedicated games room with a pool table, a chess set and a cupboards full of board games, toys and children’s books.

The Arsana Estate’s team of friendly staff will make your children feel as welcome as adults – whether it’s playing indoor or outdoor games (football, badminton or basketball), escorting them on nature walks within the grounds, or including them as guests at a village ceremony. Having these willing helpers on hand also gives you plenty of flexibility and freedom to do your own exploring beyond the villa.

Although equipped kitchens allow you to prepare meals for fussy eaters or babies with ease, staff will happily to do this for you – just talk through your requirements and meal schedules with the villa manager or chef and they will take care of the rest. Spaghetti in the sunset balé at six? Poolside pancakes for breakfast? No problem. Alit, the chef, will customise all meals to suit children’s tastebuds.

Neither do you have to worry about packing all that cumbersome extra equipment when you stay at The Arsana Estate as we can provide you with all the essentials, and more – from pool safety fences to baby baths, cots, high chairs and car seats. What we don’t have in-house, we can generally hire in for a small fee. Events

The substantial open space within the garden, combined with the grandiose property and its extensive facilities, makes The Arsana Estate the ideal tropical setting for parties, weddings, reunion celebrations, barbecues and other functions. Special events will be coordinated by professional outside caterers who have the world-class expertise to prepare a sumptuous feast at the villa, in addition to the coordination of decorations, flowers, lighting, sound systems and entertainment.

Groups of up to 60 seated guests can be indulged with a sizzling barbecue beside the pool at sunset, and the elevated terrace above the pool can be transformed into a stage for Balinese dance performances. The entrance hall and bar are perfect for a cocktail reception (up to 80 guests).

Spa

Guests at The Arsana Estate can enjoy a traditional massage in a choice of relaxing venues ranging from the privacy of their bedroom, to one of the cushioned poolside annexes, to the riverside or Sunset balés. Massage treatments are provided by an outside spa therapist, and the villa staff are on hand to assist with appointments.Spa

Location

The Arsana Estate is located 11km from Tanah Lot sea temple, in the sleepy village of Tohjiwa Nyambu in the Tabanan Regency. This beautiful rural area of rice fields and jungle-clad river valleys, is a nature lovers’ paradise. The enchanting village of Tohjiwa Nyambu is a stunning example of a traditional Balinese community, and is regarded as one of the prettiest villages on the island. The area is great for cycling (bicycles are available at the villa for guest use) and by taking advantage of this facility guests can enjoy a privileged insight into the agricultural, religious and daily life of the villagers. Ten kilometres away from the villa is the Nirwana Bali Golf Course, designed by Greg Norman and voted the number one golf course in Asia. The nearest beaches, which are also about ten kilometres from The Arsana Estate, are rugged and more suited to surfing than swimming.

Staff
The Arsana Estate has a dedicated team of 14 staff, including seven from the local community who are happy for guests accompany them at village ceremonies and events to give them the inside scoop on Bali life and culture.

Full-time manager
Nyoman Wiguna is The Arsana’s full-time manager and has years of experience working at the highest levels within the Bali hospitality world. His job is to oversee and coordinate the staff and property, and to assist guests during their stay. He is from the local area and is on call 24 hours a day.

Full-time chef/cook
With the Ku Dé Ta and Como Shambala kitchens on his resume, Alit is the man behind your gourmet plates. He prepares daily lunch and dinner, according to the wishes and whims of his guests. Vegetarian and healthy foods are his specialties but he can also bring a smile to the faces of comfort food fans and is a dab hand with fried chicken. He is ably assisted by Nengah who will take care of your needs at breakfast time – that most important meal of the day.

Butlers
Wayan, Made and Gangga, the three champions of all things domestic, will look after villa guests throughout the day, serving food, snacks and beverages and assist the kitchen at meal times as well as attending to all of the daily cleaning duties at the villa.

Gardener/pool attendants
Three gardeners tend the garden at The Arsana keeping it looking spick and span and hugely tropical. Unfortunately, the pool doesn’t clean itself, so every morning the pool attendant will be out there discreetly taking care of business so you can enjoy your poolside experience even more.

Spa staff/masseuse
Off-site, fully trained spa staff will visit the villa upon request to provide a range of spa and massage treatments.

Security
The villa is kept safe and secure 24 hours a day by three security guards working in shifts.

Maintenance
Should your AC need attention, don’t despair. Gusti is on hand to fix it – or anything else that needs an overhaul.

The American owners’ spiritual leanings and passion for Indonesian culture and surfing is evident throughout this delightful property which is named after Hansa, the swan that transports Saraswati, Goddess of Knowledge.

It’s therefore no coincidence that Villa Hansa is within easy access of a string of some of Bali’s finest surfing beaches; Pererenan Beach is a mere 300m walk away and legendary surfer’s haunt, Echo Beach, ten minutes by car. But for guests who prefer more leisurely, home-based pleasures there’s always the 18m infinity-edge pool, centre-stage of pretty gardens leading down to a river and terraced rice-fields, or the yoga room, which also doubles as a TV / entertainment room.

Spirituality is a recurring element, from the four ensuite bedrooms named after Hindu gods to Tibetan prayer flags and constantly burning incense, chosen for its therapeutic qualities. Manager Asmara is also the villa’s spiritual advisor and expert on Balinese traditions. He is more than happy to impart his wisdom and arrange guest participation in traditional Hindu ceremonies, such as the villa’s monthly full moon blessings or rituals at the village temple.

As avid collectors of Indonesian art and antiques, the owners’ personally sourced Indonesian pieces, including fine old textiles, antique furniture and objects, are tastefully displayed in all rooms. Committed to eco-friendly practices and a healthy lifestyle, food is predominantly local organic, recycling is encouraged and household cleaning materials are biodegradable. Supporting the local community, the villa established the Hansa Foundation, helping fund village children in the arts, sports and environmentally-aware education.

With its positive energy and genuine Balinese hospitality, Villa Hansa offers a relaxed escape, where the extremely friendly staff of ten, as well as three resident dogs, are all part of one big happy family.

ACCOMMODATION

Rooms
Contemporary Balinese style with traditional touches, Villa Hansa comprises a main open-air pavilion with serap (ironwood) roofing, containing the living-dining room, kitchen and adjoining staff quarters. This building looks out over lovely tropical gardens with infinity-edge pool, balé and wooden deck area. Just outside the pavilion, to the left of the kitchen, a stairway leads to the detached yoga room.

Within the gardens and beside the pool, a detached one-storey wing contains bedrooms one and two. Further down on the same side, a double-storey, contemporary designed block contains bedrooms three and four. The pool and bedrooms extend to a lower lawn section and gardens flanking a small river; to the right stands the villa’s shrine.

The villa front entrance is accessed via an outer compound comprising manager’s office and parking area. Through traditional wood doors, stone steps lead down to a Balinese-style pond, filled with lofty lotus blooms and koi fish, surrounded by a moss-engulfed high wall with water feature. This section backs on to the main pavilion and living-dining room.

Bedrooms
All four ensuite bedrooms are located in two, separate outdoor wings in the gardens, flanking the pool’s left side. Each is individually named after a Hindu god and varies in character and décor, but all are exquisitely furnished with antique pieces personally sourced by the owners. Rooms feature dark wood floors and king-size beds with four-poster frames and attached mosquito nets. Quality white bed linens are draped with old, hand-woven Sumbalese throws, while soft furnishings vary in colour in each room. All rooms supply safety deposit boxes and air conditioning (apart from bedroom three, all have traditional high ceilings with fan).

Bathrooms, especially those of bedrooms one and two, are a strong feature. All are fitted with stylish stainless steel his n’ hers Grohe sinks, white stone floors and separate stone wall partitions disguising the toilet and shower. Centre-stage is an indulgent circular stone bathtub.

Villa Hansa sleeps eight guests, and an additional baby cot and rollaway bed can be provided upon request.

Bedrooms one and two
Lying close too the main pavilion and right beside the pool, these two bedrooms are contained in a one-storey wing with serap roof. They are entered through glass patio doors.

Bedroom one, Brahma (‘God of Creation’) offers a creative mix of old and new, with striking contemporary Balinese art contrasting with antique pieces such as stone Buddha heads. Traditional wooden doors lead through to a tropical outdoor bathroom, comprising high walls encircling a lush garden area with simple Balinese-style shower, – as well as the features common to all the bathrooms mentioned above.

Bedrooms three and four
These two bedrooms are housed in a double-storey modern wing beyond the pool, surrounded by tropical foliage. Contemporary in design, rooms here contain more understated, traditional art and décor. On the ground floor, bedroom three, Ciwa (‘God who destroys negative energy’) features floor-to-ceiling windows and a low, flat ceiling without ceiling fan. Leading out from the bedroom, the large porch with poly-rattan daybed and antique Javanese wooden chairs offers views of the gardens and terraced rice fields opposite. The bathroom is also more contemporary than those in the other wing. Apart from a small outdoor shower area, the grey-hued room is indoors. Facilities follow the other bathrooms’ format, but with only one sink.

On the first-floor, bedroom four, Ganesha (‘God of wisdom and prosperity’) is reached by an outer stone stairway. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows look out over the pool, and the large private balcony with outdoor furniture offers the best views from the villa, overlooking the terraced rice fields, river and gardens. The bathroom is similar to that in bedroom three.

Living, dining & kitchen
The property’s heart, an open-plan and open-sided living pavilion, is edged at the rear by a stunning water-wall feature which provides a constant soothing backdrop. A lounge area on the right is furnished with two white leather sofas and contrasting antique wood chairs and table, all arranged on warm Borneo-wood flooring; Indonesian artifacts, stone statues and vases of exotic blooms add a decorative touch. From the traditional vaulted ceiling hangs a huge lamp made with Tibetan characters encased in shell pieces – this Tibetan element is a recurring theme throughout Villa Hansa.

The central dining area comprises an expansive table crafted from solid teak wood, seating ten. To the left and on a lower level, the open-plan kitchen is contemporary in style and well equipped; a small guest washroom plus staff quarter’s leads off from here.

Being open to the elements, this pavilion doesn’t have air conditioning, but is kept cool by ceiling fan and natural breezes; bamboo blinds run along the entire front length, which looks out across the garden and pool. In keeping with the spiritual ambiance of the villa, this pavilion is without a TV or DVD player, but an iPod and dock is provided for musical diversion.

Yoga & entertainment room
The stand-alone yoga room is situated behind the kitchen and accessed via a high-walled stone corridor and up a staircase. Sunlight streams into this glass-encased, lofty-ceilinged room which comes tastefully decorated with antique pieces and furniture, including a Javanese carved wood table and Buddhist stone statue. Floors are of polished dark woods, littered with Balinese floor cushions. Continuing the spiritual theme, a striking chandelier-style ceiling lamp features 108 miniature Buddhist characters in individual glass pieces.

Although designed for yoga (several yoga mats are supplied), this multi-functional room also contains the villa’s only TV (29-inch plasma TV with 380 channels), plus DVD / CD player and Bose sound system. DVDs are also provided.

The ten staff at Villa Hansa all live locally and are regarded by guests and owners as part of the Hansa family. With the emphasis on a family-style Balinese experience, this endearingly friendly team are dedicated to making your stay enjoyable and relaxed. They are also keen to introduce you to the local culture; anything from practicing Indonesian cooking to making Balinese prayer offerings.

Full-time manager:Resembling an Indonesian version of American actor Eddie Murphy, Asmara is not only helpful and friendly but is particularly knowledgeable about Balinese culture. He can assist you to experience local Hindu ceremonies and rituals either at the villa or in the surrounding area.
Two full-time chefs: Villa Hansa’s English-speaking chefs perfectly complement one another in the kitchen. Putu specialises in Asian cuisine, including Thai, Indian, Indonesian and some Japanese (Sushi). She has fifteen years’ experience working for foreign employers. Erland specialises in Western cuisine and is a dab hand at anything from pizzas and spaghetti to tacos. He previously worked for a catering company for more than six years.
One driver: Made (male) speaks decent English and has won many fans as a guide and driver showing guests around the region.
Two housekeepers: Yuli and Made (both female) are responsible for the villa cleaning, housekeeping duties plus assisting the kitchen and guests.
One caretaker: The only live-in staff member, Komang is responsible for pool maintenance and assisting with general villa duties.

Dining
The dining room in the main residence continues the elegant simplicity of the villa with a large modern teak table seating 12. Antique cabinets complement the modern table and chairs. The dining room can be air-conditioned or features large teak doorways that can be left open to capture cool tropical breezes. In addition to the indoor dining area there is a pool side teak table with umbrella seating 10. This is the perfect place for lunch after a refreshing dip in the pool or to dine under the stars.

Master Suite
The multi-level master suite consists of an air-conditioned bedroom furnished with a king-size bed and equipped with a 32” flat screen satellite-channel TV and DVD player.

In front of the bedroom is an elevated timber deck which offers a breathtaking view of the ocean. The ensuite bathroom presents an indoor area with an overhead monsoon shower and a handheld shower and twin marble washbasins on a black polished granite vanity unit. Guest Rooms
Three fully air-conditioned guest rooms rest to one side of the main pavilion, at the far end of the pool. Each identical bedroom is furnished with a king bed (one of which converts to twins), and equipped with a TV and DVD player, and each features glass walls and doors that open to a stone pool deck and the stunning view of the ocean.

Master bedrooms 1 & 2 are located upstairs in the main building and are both as sleek and sexy as each other. Lined with huge blow up images from the owner’s travels around Indonesia, each bedroom has white linens, hardwood floors, a high-pitched ceiling and wide views of the ocean from not only the king-size bed and the stone-paved balcony, but from the bathtub and shower as well. The bathrooms carry a nautical theme of seahorse- and starfish-shaped fittings to complement the ever-present sight of the ocean. To the rear of each bedroom, a spacious dressing areas faces away from the sea and yields to rice fields and a volcanic horizon.

In the antechamber between the master bedrooms is a large sitting area with two white painted daybeds and a wooden table under a translucent white skylight. Glass doors open out to a furnished stone terrace with ocean and garden views.

Guest bedroom 1 is situated in the gardens, just below the pool. This room is bathed in natural sunlight courtesy of two sets of sliding glass doors, one of which leads out to a stone terrace overlooking a manicured lawn and two very inviting hammocks. A king-size bed rests on a raised plinth beneath a stone frieze depicting tropical palm fronds and frangipani flowers, while two white leather easy chairs just beg to be sat upon and a large white wardrobe provides plenty of storage. A semi-open outdoor bathroom with monsoon shower and a bathtub invites guests to experience bathing under the sun and stars.

Guest bedroom 2 sits next to a garden of wild grasses and flowers, a little further along the garden pathway. Sliding doors open onto a wooden deck, bringing the outdoors in. This room is furnished with a white-painted king-size bed and two dark wooden wardrobes. A large wooden lamp and an Indonesian totem sit alongside a zebra striped leather chair, while a huge image depicting a school of tropical fish reminds guests which country they are in. The bathroom features a sunken open-air tub with hand-held shower for more outdoor glory.

Guest bedroom 3 lies at the very bottom of the garden, amidst a grove of juvenile palm trees. Two inviting lawn chairs rest on the terrace taking in this miniature forest setting while, inside, the room is dominated by a blonde-wood king-size bed, flanked by wicker lamps and heralded by a bird carving. Two similar coloured wardrobes provide storage, while more tantalising images of Indonesian island-life adorn the walls. The open-air bathroom is noteworthy for its water wall and cleverly designed, monsoon shower that looks as though it could be a time portal to another dimension.

In the main house, Ombak Putih’s air-conditioned white and blue themed living room is furnished with two comfy sofas and chairs and an antique coffee table all set before a 46-inch TV with satellite channels and a Blu-Ray disc player. Antique wooden artefacts and a Balinese gong adorn the room and sliding glass lead out from here to the garden. Through a pair of blue-painted traditional Balinese doors is a glass-shelved cupboard and a thoughtfully positioned guest washroom.

Separated from the living area by the grand central foyer, the dining room and kitchen are dominated by a very long and very beautiful suar wood table with seating for ten lit by three hanging lanterns with huge woven bamboo shades. A montage of aqua-blue images embellish the walls alongside tribal shields from Papua. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors at one end of the dining area provide garden views and lead out to the pool and terrace.

The villa has an enviable, air conditioned feature kitchen that’s almost over-equipped with serious brand-name appliances. Characterised by a wall of rough-cut marble mosaic and polished concrete work surfaces, the kitchen includes a massive central island lit by three hanging lanterns and accompanied by four wooden bar stools.

Above, on the rooftop terrace, daybeds beckon for sunbathing and sunset cocktails.

The alfresco dining area sits to the right of the pool between the sunken lounge and a patio area lined with river stones and furnished with two all-weather couches. A ten-seater dining table provides a lovely spot to enjoy dinner after the heat of the day has subsided.

Gardens and pool. The villa’s mature garden stretches for what feels like forever, changing its characteristics as it meanders past the pool and the guest bedrooms towards the property’s boundary. At the far end of the 30-metre pool the water overflows down a three metre cascade to a smaller pool fronted by two Ganesha (elephant god) statues. Villa manager:Ketut Sukerta has many years of experience working as a luxury villa manager. His job is to oversee and coordinate the staff and property, and to assist guests during their stay. He lives locally and is on call 24 hours a day.

Chef/cook:Ketut Mudiana has worked in several Seminyak villas and is a dab hand with Italian recipes. He prepares daily lunch and dinner according to the wishes and whims of his guests. He is ably assisted by a cook who also takes care of breakfasts.

Butlers/housekeeping:Ketut Sendri is the head butler and he is helped out by his team of three housekeepers. They will attend to all of the daily cleaning and domestic duties at the villa, as well as waiting on guests and assisting the kitchen at meal times.

Gardener/pool attendants:A discreet team of two tends to the garden and pool at Ombak Putih keeping it all looking spick and span.

Spa staff/masseuse:Off-site, fully-trained spa staff will visit the villa upon request to provide a range of spa and massage treatments.

Security:The villa is kept safe and secure by four security guards on shifts 24 hours a day.

Maintenance:A maintenance man is on hand to ensure all villa workings run smoothly.
